SAINTS GAME NOTES

LAST TIME OUT

  • St. Lawrence gets back on the ice this weekend for a two-game series at Quinnipiac after taking last weekend off. Friday's game with the Bobcats will be the first for the Saints since a 4-3 loss to Colgate on Sunday, January 24. The Saints had planned on playing a two-game series with Niagara at Appleton Arena last weekend, but the Purple Eagles were forced to cancel due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • The Saints played a three-game series with Colgate two weeks ago, with all three games being decided by 4-3 scores. The Saints lost in overtime at home on Thursday, January 21, then beat the Raiders in Hamilton on Saturday before losing on the road Sunday. Both games at Colgate were decided in regulation.
  • Kaden Pickering scored three goals and added a pair of assists in the series for the Saints, including two goals and an assist in the Saints' win. David Jankowski and Greg Lapointe both had a goal and three assists, and Cameron Buhl had four assists for the Saints. Nicholas Trela added a pair of goals and one assist.
  • Emil Zetterquist started in goal in the first two games of the series, posting a .887 save percentage and a 3.44 goals against average. Francis Boisvert saw his first action of the season in Sunday's game, making 17 saves.

SERIES HISTORY

  • St. Lawrence holds a 16-17-6 record against Quinnipiac. The Saints took four of a possible six points in a home-and-home series with the Bobcats earlier this year.  Quinnipiac earned two points with a shootout win after a 2-2 tie in the Saints' season opener, and the Saints beat the Bobcats 4-2 in the second game of the series.
  • The Saints' tie on December 31 snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bobcats, and the win on January 3 marked St. Lawrence's first win in the series since a 2-0 win in the first game of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals in March, 2017.
  • Greg Lapointe scored a goal in each of the two games againsT Quinnipiac this season, and Cameron Buhl had a goal and two assists. Emil Zetterquist posted a 1.92 goals against average and a .946 save percentage, stopping 70 of the 74 shots he faced.

SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC

  • Quinnipiac enters this weekend's series ranked 11th/12th in the national polls. Like St. Lawrence, the Bobcats has last weekend off after going 0-1-2 in an ECAC Hockey series at Clarkson January 22-24 with one shootout win and one shootout loss.
  • Odeen Tufto is running away with the lead in scoring in ECAC Hockey with 28 points in 18 games, with teammate Zach Metsa ranking second with 17 points. Tufto ranks third nationally with 1.56 points per game and is second with 1.33 assists per game.
  • Ty Smilanic leads the league with 11 goals, and Ethan de Jong leads the league and ranks second nationally with six power play goals.
  • The Bobcats' power play ranks eighth nationally with a 23.8% success rate, and the team's penalty kill ranks 11th with a kill rate of 86.5%.
  • Keith Petruzzelli leads the league with a 1.79 goals against average and four shutouts. His .929 save percentage ranks second in the league behind only St. Lawrence's Emil Zetterquist, who has a .936 save percentage entering the weekend.

PICKERING NAMED ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • Kaden Pickering was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on January 25 after scoring three goals and adding two assists in a three-game series with Colgate.
  • The award was the first of Pickering's career. The junior from Madrid, New York, is tied for the team lead in goals (4) and is tied for second in points (8).

BUHL ON POINT-PER-GAME PACE

  • Sophomore forward Cameron Buhl leads St. Lawrence with 10 points on two goals and eight assists through 10 games this season.
  • Buhl has already doubled his production from his rookie season, when he scored one goal and added four assists in 29 games.
  • The last St. Lawrence player to average at least one point per game played was Mike Marnell, who had 27 points in 25 games played (he missed 12 games due to injury) in 2016-17. The last player to average a point per team game for the Saints was Greg Carey, who had 57 points in 38 games as a senior in 2013-14.

ROAD SWEET ROAD?

  • While the Saints are glad to be back in Appleton Arena full time this season, the Saints have fared much better on the road than they have at home this season.
  • The Saints are 4-1-0 in road games this season and 0-3-2 at home. The Saints' lone road loss was their last game, a 4-3 defeat at Colgate.
  • The last time the Saints won their first four road games was in the 1998-98 season, when the team opened the season 5-0-0 on the road. St. Lawrence also won its first four games away from home in the 1999-00 season, but the fourth win was a neutral site game vs. Wayne State in Buffalo.

NOT GIVING UP MUCH ON THE PK

  • St. Lawrence is the second-least penalized team in the nation, averaging just 7.2 PIM per game. Minnesota leads the nation, spending just 5.6 minutes per game in the box.
  • In addition to taking very few penalities, the Saints have been doing well killing off the few power play opportunities they've given up. St. Lawrence ranks fifth nationally on the penalty kill with a 90.6% success rate. The Saints have given up just three power play goals this season and have scored one shorthanded goal.

ZETTERQUIST NAMED TO RICHTER AWARD WATCH LIST

  • Emil Zetterquist was one of 35 goalies nationally to be named to the Mike Richter Award "Watch List" earlier this week.
  • Zetterquist ranks seventh nationally with a .936 save percentage and 15th in the nation with a 2.08 goals against average.
  • The Mike Richter Award was established in 2014 and is given annually to the top goalie in men's NCAA Division I hockey. The Watch List will be pared down to approximately 15 names in the next two weeks, and the winner will be announced at this year's NCAA Frozen Four in April.

STRONG STARTS

  • St. Lawrence has been strong out of the gate this season, outscoring the opposition 11-5 in the first period.
  • The Saints hold a slim 7-6 advantage in scoring in the second period, and have been outscored 12-5 in the third period.
