Kaden Pickering scored and
Grant Adams made 13 saves in a relief effort, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell to seventh-ranked Western Michigan 8-2 on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 3-5-4 on the season, while the Broncos improved to 9-4-0.
The Broncos would strike first as Chad Hillebrand played the puck back off the boards behind the St. Lawrence goal and found Paul Washe in the slot, who buried the puck past Saints' goaltender
Emil Zetterquist for an early 1-0 lead just two minutes and 56 seconds into the first. Ronnie Attard also assisted on the play.
Just over three minutes later, the Skating Saints evened the score. Saints' captain
Kaden Pickering maintained control fighting off four Broncos, then was able to tip the puck to
Philippe Chapleau, who fired a high shot over the shoulder of Western Michigan goaltender Brandon Bussi.
The Broncos would take the lead once again as Ethen Frank made it 2-1 with a shot from the left circle under the arm of Zetterquist at the 7:05 mark.
After holding a 2-1 edge after the first period of play, the Bronco's worked to extend their lead, scoring the next three to take a 5-1 lead.
Seven minutes and 32 seconds into the second period, Zetterquist was relieved by sophomore goaltender
Grant Adams.
One minute and 35 seconds into the second period, with some stellar tic-tac-toe passing Cole Gallant scored from the door step with assists from Ty Glover and Drew Worrad.
Washe then scored his second of the night and the third power play goal of the game for the Broncos, making it 3-1 at 5:17. Worrad would add his own goal just over two minutes later off the feed from Jason Polin.
Senior captain Pickering scored the Saints' second power play goal of the season and the second of the night for the Scarlet and Brown.
Tucker McIntosh fed the puck to
Mason Waite, who passed to Pickering, who was able to walk in and score from the center of the left circle at the 14:48 mark. The assist from Waite was the first career point for first-year. It was also the first assist of the season for McIntosh.
Gallant kicked off scoring in the third period with his second of the night, making it 6-2 in favor of the Broncos. Two more goals from Western Michigan's Polin and Cam Knuble would seal the 8-2 final.
Both Zetterquist and Adams finished with 13 saves apiece for the Scarlet and Brown, while Bussi made 21 for the Broncos.
Western Michigan finished with a 34-23 advantage in shots and went 3-for-5 on the power play, while the Saints went 1-for-7 on the man-advantage.
