Senior captain
Kaden Pickering scored two goals, including the late game-winner, as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey scored three goals in the final five minutes to complete the 6-4 comeback win over Princeton at Hobey Baker Rink on Friday night in Princeton, N.J.
The Skating Saints improved to 3-3-4 on the season, and 2-1-2 in ECAC play. The Tigers moved to 3-2-1 and 2-1-0 in conference action.
"I thought we settled in well as the game went along," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach
Brent Brekke "We got way too casual after getting an early lead. They are a very skilled team and they make alot of plays that can change the game quickly, as we saw tonight. That was a good win for us and shows immense growth for our group to come from behind and find a way to finish against a talented team."
After the two teams traded shots off the post in the early going, the Skating Saints ultimately would strike first in the contest. The scoring play started in the defensive zone as
Jordan Steinmetz caused a Tigers' turnover.
Ashton Fry picked up the loose puck and passed it right back to Steinmetz. The junior forward did the rest, as he skated coast-to-coast and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Aidan Porter to take the 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown doubled their lead three minutes and 32 seconds later when Pickering made a highlight reel play to put St. Lawrence up 2-0. Following a Princeton dump-in, Pickering received a pass from fellow senior
Jeff Clarke deep in the Saints' defensive zone, then proceeded to carry the puck down the ice. The captain took it all the way splitting the defenders and chopped a shot past Porter to take the 2-0 lead.
The Tigers went on the counterattack and scored the next three goals to end the first period. Nick Seitz scored the first for Princeton one minute and 19 seconds after Pickering's tally. Ian Murphy and Corey Andonovski scored goals in the final five minutes of the period to make the score 3-2 going into the intermission in favor of the Tigers.
Princeton took the 4-2 lead five minutes and 22 seconds into the seconds off a four-on-four goal from Finn Evans, but the Skating Saints fought back to cut the Tigers' lead to one.
The Scarlet and Brown were fresh off a power play when
Emil Zetterquist caught Princeton on a change. The senior netminder fired a long pass up to Fry, who was stationed at the opposing blue line. Fry stepped into the zone and fired a shot on goal, but was blocked by a Tigers' defender. The puck landed on the doorstep and onto the waiting stick of
Ty Naaykens, who shoveled the puck past Porter for his first career goal. Zetterquist earned his second career assist on the play.
The Skating Saints put on heavy pressure in the third period as they searched for an equalizer. First-year defenseman
Philippe Chapleau would eventually score his first career goal to tie the game at 4-4.
Aleksi Peltonen won the offensive zone faceoff, passed back to
Josh Boyer, who passed it back to Chapleau at the blue line. The first-year briefly hesitated to beat a defender then fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Porter to tie the game at 4-4.
The Skating Saints carried the momentum through the latter stages of the contest and took the lead with less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation. Pickering picked off a pass in the Saints' defensive zone and once again carried the puck end-to-end. Pickering weaved around the Tigers' defense and ripped a shot top shelf to stun Princeton and take the 5-4 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown scored their third goal of the final five minutes off an empty-netter.
Tim Makowski scored his second goal of the season on the empty frame to ice the game.
Zetterquist finished with 19 saves to go along with his assist in the win, while Porter was busy in the Tigers' net stopping 29 shots in the loss. Each team had five power play opportunities in the contest. St. Lawrence went 0-5 on the man-advantage, while Princeton went 1-5.
The Skating Saints will be back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, November 20th in Hamden, Conn. to take on the fifth-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats at the People's United Center at 7 p.m.
