Marvin Sibanda scored two penalty kick goals, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie with RIT on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Saints moved to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers went to 7-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play.
"That was a matchup of two really good teams today that battled right to the wire," said head coach
Mike Toshack "Again, it's a tail of not finishing your opportunities early in the game, they can come back to bite you. However, the incredible fight and resilience the team showed was awesome, I couldn't ask much more from them. We look forward to next weekend's games against Bard and Vassar."
The Scarlet and Brown got on the board first following their first penalty kick of the contest. With just eight minutes and 21 seconds elapsed in the first half, the Saints kicked a ball that was knocked down by an RIT hand in the box, resulting in the kick. Sibanda was tasked with taking the free look on goal, and took advantage of the opportunity by burying the kick for his team-leading fourth goal of the season, and the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers came out of the half with a renewed sense of urgency, which resulted in two early goals. Just 3:54 into the second half, RIT was given a corner-kick. John Lucas fired a ball into the box and bounced around before finding the head of Randy Dickersbach. Dickersbach sent the ball high in the air, but found Adam Wuest on the post, who headed the ball in for the 1-1 equalizer.
Just 3:28 later, a bad break led to the Tigers taking the lead. With the Saints hemmed into their defensive zone, an RIT midfielder launched a ball towards the net that was knocked down by a St. Lawrence defender. The ball seemingly had eyes as it fell directly to Josh Price, who ripped home the goal for the 2-1 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown received their second penalty-kick of the game 10:10 into the second frame. Following a bad Tigers' pass that sent the ball towards their own goal,
Robert Reynolds made a run looking to tie the game up. Reynolds was hauled down in the box by an RIT defender, giving the Saints the kick. Sibanda once again beat Jason Trapp to tie the game at 2-2 as he scored his fifth goal of the year.
The extremely chippy game went to overtime following 34 minutes of scoreless ball. Much like in regulation, the physicality limited chances as both teams struggled to generate offense in the extra 20. Both squads were only able to gather two shots a piece, and one on net per. Both goalkeepers handled the shots to force the 2-2 draw.
Ben Woelfinger stopped three shots for the Saints, while Trapp turned away five for the Tigers.
The teams were even with 14 shots apiece, but the Scarlet and Brown had the 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Saints doubled up the Tigers 12-6 in corner-kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown will go on the road for a two-game road trip. On Friday, October 15th, they will take on Bard College at 4Â p.m. then will face Vassar on Saturday, October 16th at 2Â p.m.
