Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Down Bard 2-1

Marvin Sibanda scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, and Michael McDougald scored a second-half game-winner as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Bard 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Bard College.

The Saints improved to 7-5-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in the Liberty League. The Raptors fell to 4-7-0 and 0-5-0 in conference play.

"Everybody contributed to the win today," said head coach Mike Toshack "The team did well to manage the game as we were able to get many players some important rest. We can now turn around quickly and focus our attention on Vassar tomorrow afternoon."

The first goal of the game was a beautiful play that was initially setup by Max Mogul and Kyle Graber. Mogul made a run down the right side of the pitch and fired a cross into the box. The ball was headed away by a Bard defender, but landed on the foot of Graber. Graber fed the ball to Sibanda, who was just outside of the box. Sibanda wound up and ripped a shot past Gavin Hersey for the 1-0 lead.

The Saints wasted little time doubling their lead as they notched their second goal 3:53 into the second half. Sibanda had the ball in the middle of the field and bounced over a pass to Da'Vaughn Anderson. Anderson collected the ball and baited in two defenders before dishing the ball off to an open McDougald. McDougald streaked down the left side and made everyone think he was going to cross it as he stayed wide. He instead tucked a shot in between Hersey and the nearside post for the 2-0 lead.

With 16:09 left in regulation Bard got one of the goals back off a corner kick. The corner kick landed in the box as both teams were clamoring for the loose ball. The ball bounced to Denny Lane, who buried the goal to cut the lead in half.

Ben Woelfinger made four saves in the winning effort, while Hersey stopped four of the six shots he faced.

St. Lawrence had a 15-9 advantage in total shots, but both teams were tied at six shots apiece for the match. Bard had the 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Scarlet and Brown will head to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. tomorrow to take on the Brewers of Vassar College at 2:00 p.m.
