Ben Woelfinger stopped four shots in goal, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Vassar on Saturday afternoon at Vassar College.
The Saints fell to 7-6-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in the Liberty League. The Brewers improved to 10-2-1 and 4-1-1 in conference play.
"Today was another tale of missed opportunities coming back to haunt us," said head coach
Mike Toshack "We look forward to heading back home to host Skidmore College next weekend. The league is still wide open with almost everyone having a chance at a playoff bid."
St. Lawrence had a golden opportunity to score early in the contest.
Marvin Sibanda found himself open in scoring territory after playing a little give-and-go with
Parker Hotchkiss. Sibanda put a good shot on, but the kick missed just left of the goal as Eric Wnorowski did well to shut off the nearside post from the junior midfielder.
Vassar was given a golden chance themselves 29:08 into the half off a Saints' handball. A St. Lawrence defender was flagged for an unintentional handball in the box which sent Eamon Geraghty to the line. Geraghty put a low, hard shot pas the outstretched arms of Woelfinger to take the 1-0 lead.
The Brewers would end up adding an insurance goal with just under 30 minutes to play in the second half. Quinn Tunnell was making his way down the field and dished a pass off to Owen Fauth. Fauth settled the ball to the inside to generate separation from the St. Lawrence defender, and was able to rip a shot off the post and in for the 2-0 lead.
Woelfinger stopped four shots for the Saints in the contest, while Wnorowski stopped four in the shutout.
Both teams generated 13 shots, but the Brewers had the 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown led the game with seven corner kicks to Vassar's five.
The Scarlet and Brown come back to Sandy MacAllaster Field next Saturday, October 23
rd for their last home game of the regular season. The Saints will take on Skidmore College on senior day starting at 3:00 p.m.
