Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Reynolds' Scintillating Senior Day Sparks Saints 3-2 Win

Senior captain Robert Reynolds scored the game-winning goal, and had two assists, while Max Mogul tallied his first goal in Scarlet and Brown, as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team dropped Skidmore 3-2 in a crucial Liberty League contest on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints improved to 8-6-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds fell to to 7-5-2 and 2-3-2 in conference play. With the win, St. Lawrence has 13 points and is in the fifth-place spot in the Liberty League. Vassar and RIT are narrowly ahead with 14 points, while Hobart is two points behind at 11 in sixth-place.

Before today's contest the St. Lawrence University men's soccer program honored the seven members of the 2022 senior class. The seven members of the senior class were team captain Quinn Houseman, team captain Reynolds, team captain Andrew Terhune, Ethan Riddell, Raphael Zoccolaro, Da'Vaughn Anderson, and Parker Hotchkiss.

"We're really pleased with the win today, and really pleased for our team today, especially the seniors, who did a great job all day," said head coach Mike Toshack "As a team we were very resilient, and I think each week we get stronger and tougher as a group, and I think that showed today. We missed some chances after going up 3-1 to make it a three or four goal lead that I know some guys would want to have back, which is important towards the end as they got a goal back, and they are a well-coached team that was very hungry."

The Saints wasted little time getting the first tally of the game scoring 28 seconds into the game. Marvin Sibanda had possession of the ball and gave it off to Reynolds. Reynolds sent the ball right back to Sibanda, who was making a run through three Skidmore defenders. The junior outran the Skidmore back line and put the ball past the 6-6 frame of Bobby Stratts to take the 1-0 lead.

The Thoroughbreds settled down and knotted the game up fourteen minutes and 27 seconds in. Roman Toepler settled a pass in the St. Lawrence box and fired a shot towards Ben Woelfinger. The shot attempt was blocked but landed on the foot of Max Heberlein, who was on the doorstep. Heberlein flicked a ball past Woelfinger to tie the game at one.

Reynolds was not done creating as less than five minutes into the second half his back pressure sprung Mogul for his first collegiate goal. Off a Skidmore goal kick, the Thoroughbreds got bottled up in the midfield. The Skidmore midfielder spun towards his own net looking for relief, but only found Reynolds, who was providing pressure from his forward role. Reynolds ripped a perfect through-ball to the speedy Mogul, who beat the Thoroughbred back line and Stratts to the far post to take the 2-1 lead.

Reynolds capped off his spectacular senior day with a goal of his own at the 63:10 mark. Senior forward Anderson started the play with a brilliant pass down to fellow senior Zoccolaro. Zoccolaro connected with Reynolds in the middle of the box and the captain tapped it home to complete his four-point day.

Skidmore cut the lead in half off a Saints' yellow card with four minutes and 34 seconds in regulation. The Thoroughbreds' Ethan Slager threw a changeup pass into the box that bounced around until Matteo Scarselli headed the ball home. Skidmore made the score 3-2 with the goal, but was unable to get the equalizer they needed in the final minutes.

Woelfinger stopped six shots for the Saints in the contest, while Stratts stopped four of the seven he faced in the loss.

St. Lawrence had the 18-11 lead in shots, but Skidmore had the narrow 8-7 edge in shots on goal. The Thoroughbreds had six corner kicks to the Saints' two.

The Scarlet and Brown will be on the road next Saturday, October 30th with their sights set on a Liberty League playoff berth. The Saints will take on Hobart College at 3:00 p.m. in their last game of the regular season.
