Marvin Sibanda scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team spoiled Hobart's senior day 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cozzens Field.
The Saints improved to 9-6-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in the Liberty League. The Statesmen fell to 8-7-2, and 3-4-2 in conference play with the overtime loss.
The Scarlet and Brown secured a playoff berth earlier this week, but were jockeying for positioning this weekend. The Saints needed a win and an RIT loss to gain the fourth seed and a home playoff game, but the Tigers came away with a win over Union.
"That was a great result today, we got two very big wins in a row, which says alot about the character of this team," said head coach
Mike Toshack "We scored three fantastic goals in the game, and there were alot of guys digging deep to get the win. We're looking forward to our playoff game against Vassar on Tuesday."
St. Lawrence will enter the postseason as the fifth seed in the Liberty League and will travel to Vassar in the first round. With the loss, and out-of-town bad luck, Hobart received the seven seed and were leapfrogged by Skidmore, who beat Bard 4-0.
Hobart got on the board first in the contest off a bad luck bounce for the Saints. A harmless ball on the defensive side of the center line was popped straight up by a Statesman midfielder. The ball was headed by a St. Lawrence defender towards
Ben Woelfinger, who was looking to kill the play, but was kicked by Matic Valenzuela, who snuck behind the defense to get the goal.
Sibanda would knot the game up at 1-1 29 minutes into the first half off a corner kick. The Saints were given a corner with just under 15 minutes left in the half, and the ball landed at the feet of Sibanda. The junior was trapped by three defenders as he worked the ball back to towards midfield. Suddenly, Sibanda spun around to beat all three defenders, and he struck a low ball past the keeper to tie the contest.
The Saints broke the tie in the 54th minute when a low shot to the right by
Max Mogul beat Guillermo Castaneda Chang to take the 2-1 lead. However, with 26 minutes to go in regulation the Statesmen got an equalizer. Robbie Caron was able to beat Woelfinger to tie the match at 2-2. He was assisted on the play by Frederick Madsen.
The game went into overtime where Sibanda would score the game-winner for the Scarlet and Brown.
Will Baker received a pass from Sibanda and made his way down the pitch before dishing a pass off to
Raphael Zoccolaro. The senior danced around as he was surrounded by three Hobart defenders. Zoccolaro finally broke free from the scrum and found an open
Robert Reynolds, who trapped the ball to Sibanda. The sure-footed junior snuck the ball past the charging goalkeeper to give the Saints the win.
Woelfinger stopped two shots in the win, while Castaneda Chang stopped five of the eight, he faced.
St. Lawrence held a narrow 15-14 shots advantage, but doubled up the Statemen 8-4 in shots on goal.
The Scarlet and Brown will be on the road to start their playoff journey as the #5 seed. The Saints will travel to Vassar to take on the Brewers in the first-round. St. Lawrence will be looking to avenge their 2-0 loss to Vassar from earlier in the year. Â
