Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Settle for 1-1 Tie Versus Colorado College

Sophomore defenseman Luc Salem scored his first goal of the season, and Emil Zetterquist stopped 29 shots as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team settled for a 1-1 tie against Colorado College on Saturday night at Ed Robson Arena.

The Scarlet and Brown move to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Tigers went to 0-1-1.

Chris Pappas earned his second career assist in as many nights to start his Saints career.

"Our guys played a much better game tonight and took a good step in our process," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach Brent Brekke "Colorado College has a good team and they play with plenty of speed. I thought our puck management was better and we got another strong performance from Zetterquist in net"

After getting outshot by a wide margin last night, St. Lawrence answered the bell by putting the rubber on Dominic Basse early and often. The Saints had a 21-11 edge in shots through the first two periods of the contest.

The Skating Saints had a great stretch in the second period as they hunted for their first goal of the game. With 5:09 left in the second frame, captain Kaden Pickering nearly put the Scarlet and Brown on the board as he took a short angle shot from the right side of Basse. However, the snapshot rang off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Pickering was not done creating as moments later he tipped a Jordan Steinmetz shot from the blue line. The tip was stopped by Basse, but was up for grabs in front of the Tigers' net. Assistant captain Tim Makowski flew in from the blue line and tried to knock home the rebound, but missed just wide. The final play of the sequence was started by Steinmetz, who caused a neutral zone turnover. Steinmetz raced onto a mini breakaway but was turned aside by Basse.

The Scarlet and Brown finally lit the lamp with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game. Captain David Jankowski's hard work started the play as the senior caused a turnover in the offensive zone during a one-on-five scenario as his teammates were changing. The puck moved around the back wall and was poked free by Justin Paul, and onto the stick of Pappas. The crafty first-year forward faked his way up the wall before curling around and down the goal line. Pappas made a beautiful heads-up pass to a wide-open Salem, who one-timed the puck home for the 1-0 lead.

Colorado College was forced to turn up the pressure as they looked to knot the game up. The Tigers found their equalizer with just over eight minutes to go in regulation. Defenseman Jack Millar was playing catch with his defensive partner Chase Foley on the blue line and decided to pull up for a shot when he found a lane. Millar's shot made its way through a screen and past Zetterquist to tie the game up at 1-1. Tommy Middleton also assisted on the play.

Colorado College rode the wave of momentum during the final eight minutes putting six shots on the net. Zetterquist was up to the task of stonewalling the Tigers on the way to overtime. During the five-minute three-on-three period, Colorado College was able to generate five shots, while the Saints took two. In the end, both teams struggled to generate any grade-A chances in overtime, and the game went down as a 1-1 draw as a result.

The Scarlet and Brown were perfect for the second night in a row killing off all four power plays, bringing their weekend total to 10-for-10. The Saints have successfully killed off their last 17 penalties dating back to the regular-season finale against Quinnipiac last February.

Colorado College held a narrow 30-28 edge in shots following their third-period attacks.

Zetterquist had another great night in net stopping 29 shots, bringing his weekend total to 69 saves on 71 shots. Basse stopped 27 for the Tigers in the effort.

St. Lawrence will go from one Tiger to another next weekend as the Saints will be traveling to Blue Cross Arena in Rochester next Saturday, October 16th to take on RIT. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
