Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Saints Come from Behind, Fall to #19 Vassar in Overtime

Two fourth-quarter goals for the St. Lawrence field hockey team sent the game into overtime, but 19th-ranked Vassar took the 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Saints and Brewers are two of the highest scoring teams in the Liberty League, and this game got off to a predictably hot start. Mckenzie Haberl scored less than two minutes into the game off of a breakaway. Less than a minute later Vassar evened the score when Gianna Trufio scored off of a goalie deflection. Hailey Brigger scored a goal for the Brewers two minutes later off of a penalty corner to go up 2-1, which would stand until the second half.

In the third quarter Vassar extended their lead to two goals when Ella Pearl found the back of the net with an assist from Brigger.

Maggie Green got one back for the Saints in the fourth, taking a deflection and sneaking the ball past the goalie. With less than five minutes left to play, a Saints penalty corner set up Haberl, who chipped the ball past the goalie into the right corner of the goal. The 3-3 scoreline would stay until the end of regulation.

While the momentum seemed to be in St. Lawrence's favor, the Brewers wasted no time in getting the ball in their offensive half in overtime. Less than a minute into the extra period Carina D'Souza found the ball amidst a scrum, and was able to slid the ball past a diving Lucy Adiutori and win the game for Vassar.

"It was awesome to score first, and to come back," head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "We went out with a lot of energy and dug deep to pull even late in the fourth. We made some good adjustments in the second half to counter Vassar's offense.

Haberl's 12 goals in as many matches is second most in the Liberty League.

Vassar outshot the Saints 19-5, including 12 shots on goal, and led in penalty corners, 10-4.

Adiutori made seven saves for the Saints, and Sarah Dumaresq made one.
