The St. Lawrence field hockey team came from behind to beat William Smith 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y. This was the fifth come-from-behind victory for the Saints this season. This win also serves as head coach
Fran Grembowicz's 200th career field hockey victory, all while leading the Saints.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Herons were the first on the board in the second quarter. A penalty stroke was called in the third minute of the second quarter, and Lauren Jackson stepped up to the spot. Adiutori was able to get a pad on the ball, but not enough to keep it out of the cage.
Late in the third quarter,
Mckenzie Haberl collected a pass in front of the goal and spun around and shot past the charging goalie. A William Smith defender deflected the shot right to
Morgan Misiaszek, who got her first goal of the season and tied the game.
Just as the fourth quarter restarted, Haberl collected a pass at the top of her offensive third, and brought the ball through a pair of defenders and slotted it for her 13th goal in as many games.
"Such an awesome effort from the Saints," Grembowicz said. "Our defense held strong and our offense did terrific work breaking the ball down field. It took us a little while to find the back of the net. Our rush on net in the fourth quarter was awesome, I'm so proud of this team."
Adiutori made four saves in the cage for the win. Stephanie Stone and Kristen McCormick split keeper duty for the Herons, and each came up with three saves.
St. Lawrence outshot the Herons 15-7, and had five penalty corners to William Smith's two.
In her 23 seasons coaching Saints' field hockey, Grembowicz is 200-185. The former basketball and softball coach also has 76 coaching wins on the hard court, and 168 wins in the diamond.
