Suzanne L'Hommedieu scored in double overtime to give the St. Lawrence field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Rochester on Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
The overtime goal was the second of the first-year L'Hommedieu's career. The Saints had back-to-back penalty corners from the left side, and a third was called to take from the right side. Junior
Mckenzie Haberl took the corner and found L'Hommedieu at the right side of the arch, and she fired in a low, bouncing shot that found the back of the cage.
The Saints were the first to strike in the game, after a scoreless first quarter. Haberl found herself in the circle surrounded by Yellowjackets, and found senior
Marlee Paterson to her right. Paterson sent in a low ball to the left corner, where first-year
Morgan Misiaszek scored her second goal in as many games to put the Saints up 1-0.
The Saints' defense looked like they were going to carry the team to a 1-0 victory, when a penalty stroke was called for Rochester in the 58th minute. League-leading goal scorer Amanda Strenk stepped up to the spot and fired a shot past
Lucy Adiutori's left shoulder to even the score and send the game to extra time.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team," said head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "They continue to improve every game. It was a tremendous game for both teams. We never stopped working and making incredible plays both offensively and defensively."
The race for post-season play is on. The 2-1 result in St. Lawrence's favor brings both Rochester and the Saints to 3-2 in league play. Vassar and RPI are also 3-2, all trailing Ithaca's 5-0 record. The top four teams make the Liberty League tournament.
Rochester had 12 shots on goal and 14 penalty corners. St. Lawrence had nine shots on goal and nine penalty corners.
Sophomore goalie Adiutori made 11 saves for the Saints, and Abigail Walrond made seven for the Yellowjackets.
