Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McDougald's Two-Goal Day Powers Saints To 3-0 Win

Michael McDougald scored two goals, and Marvin Sibanda added a goal and an assist as the St. Lawrence men's soccer team took down Clarkson 3-0 at Hantz Field on Wednesday night.

The Saints improved to 6-5-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Knights fell to 2-6-2 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play.

"That was an absolutely huge win for the team tonight," said head coach Mike Toshack "From top to bottom, everyone was excellent, and their commitment was unbelievable. The win came against a group that is one of the best coached teams we have come across. Now we turn our attention to a tough game against RIT on Saturday at Sandy."

The Scarlet and Brown got off to a good start, and got their first goal of the night twenty-two minutes and 23 seconds into the first half. Ben Woelfinger received the ball in the Saints' defensive zone and sent a booming kick past the midfield line to Raphael Zoccolaro. Zoccolaro collected the ball and fed a lead pass ahead to McDougald, who was making a run. McDougald gathered the ball and fired a right-footed shot off the far post and in for the early 1-0 lead.

The second goal of the contest came 3:28 into the second half of play. Sam Peacock was given a throw-in deep in Clarkson territory, and launched a long throw into the Knights' box. A Clarkson defender attempted to head the ball out of harm's way, but ended up knocking the ball to Sibanda, who was just outside the box. Sibanda took a sidestep inside, and ripped a shot past Ian Donahue to give St. Lawrence the two-goal advantage.

The Scarlet and Brown put the finishing touches on the game in the 67th-minute off McDougald's second goal of the match. Much like the first goal, the play started with a rocketed kick off the foot of Woelfinger in the defensive zone. The ball was initially headed by a Clarkson defender, but Sibanda was on the second touch heading the ball ahead. Sibanda's header pass found McDougald, who was one-on-one once again. He fired another shot off the far post and in to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.

Woelfinger stopped five shots in his third shutout of the season, while Donahue stopped two of the five shots he faced for Clarkson.

Clarkson had a 14-8 shot advantage in the contest, but the teams were tied at five shots on goal apiece. The Knights had three corner kicks to the Saints' one.

The Scarlet and Brown will go back to Sandy MacAllaster Field this Saturday, October 9th to take on RIT in a big Liberty League match. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
