Haberl Nets Four as Saint Clinch Playoff Spot, Beat Union 6-2

The St. Lawrence field hockey team topped Union 6-2 on North Country Field on Sunday afternoon to clinch a spot in the Liberty League playoffs.

Junior Mckenzie Haberl scored four and had two assists to lead the Saints in their final regular season conference game. Jenny L'Hommedieu and Suzanne L'Hommedieu had the other goals for the Saints. Maggie Green assisted on two of Haberl's goals, and Anna Coyne had the final assist.

With eight minutes to play in the first half, the game was tied at one apiece, but St. Lawrence closed the period with a slew of four goals in seven minutes to take the 5-1 halftime lead. Midway through the third quarter an unassisted goal by Union's Emily Dawson brought the game to within three, but less than two minutes later Haberl scored her fourth of the game, and 17th of the season, to extend the lead back to four, which it would remain for the rest of the game.

"I felt we operated on all cylinders today," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "We hit a high note on our passing game and put in another strong defensive performance. I'm so very proud of this team and the improvements we continue to make."

Sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Adiutori made one save in the first half. Cara Vredenburg was in the cage for the second half and made five saves.

Gabriella Steain made 11 saves for Union.

The Saints and Dutchwomen each had 11 penalty corners, but St. Lawrence had 17 shots on goal to Union's 10.

The Saints celebrate their first 10-win season since 2009, and their first playoff berth since 2011.

St. Lawrence earned the third seed in the tournament, and will face the second-seeded, Vassar, in Poughkeepsie on Wednesday, November 3. The Saints lost in overtime at Vassar during the season. Top-seed Ithaca will host Rochester in the other tournament matchup.
