Power-play goals from
Aly McLeod and
Shailynn Snow led the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over RIT in a non-league game on Friday night at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.
Â
McLeod put the Saints up 1-0 on the power play halfway through the first period.
Abby Hustler passed the puck to
Kristina Bahl at the goal-line, and Bahl blocked off the attack before sending the puck to McLeod at the bottom of the circle and McLeod fired it into the back of the net.
Â
Gabi Jones was called for tripping with just over two minutes left to play in the first, as was Chloé Puddifant less than a minute later, leaving the Saints to fight off a five-on-three power-play. St. Lawrence successfully killed off both penalties and held RIT to only two shots on goal.
Â
After the first, St. Lawrence had a 14-6 edge on shots.
Â
The Saints opened the second period man-down, but won the opening faceoff and killed the remaining 45 seconds of Puddifant's penalty.
Â
St. Lawrence dominated puck possession in the second, outshooting the Tigers 12-0, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Â
RIT was called for hooking one minute into the third, and Snow gave the Saints a 2-0 lead on the power play.
Nara Elia sent the puck up the ice to
Rachel Teslak, who fired the puck through the screen and Snow tipped it in.
Â
Back on the power play, Hustler made a backhand pass to Puddifant at the blue line and Puddifant sent the puck to McLeod in front of the net. McLeod fired a one timer past the RIT netminder to put the Saints up 3-0 with ten minutes left to play.
Â
St. Lawrence maintained the edge on shots, with 11 in the third, while RIT had seven.
Â
"We had good pressure all night and we finally got a few to go in the third to pull away," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We had some real good chances that didn't go along with the ones that did. Caitlin [Whitehead] and JR [
Jaimie Rainville] did a nice job when called upon to preserve the shutout. All in all a good night in front of a great crowd! It's exciting to see all the students here!"
Â
Saints' goalkeepers
Caitlin Whitehead and
Jaimie Rainville had a combined total of 13 saves in the shutout effort with Whitehead stopping six pucks and Rainville stopping seven. RIT's Sarah Coe finished with 34 saves.
Â
At the last whistle, St. Lawrence was three for six on the power-play and successfully killed both of their penalties.
Â
With the win, St. Lawrence is improved to 3-2-2 on the season, while RIT fell to 0-8-0.
Â
The Saints head to RPI's Houston Field House next Friday, October 29th for their ECAC opener at 6:00 pm.
