The Saints and Bombers played the first half scoreless, but two second-half goals sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 2-0 loss to Ithaca on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y.
Â
The Saints fell to 5-5-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in conference play with the loss. Ithaca improved to 5-4-3, and 3-0-0 in the Liberty League.
Â
"I thought we started the game very well today, but two golden opportunities slipped through our grasp," said head coach
Mike Toshack " Those two opportunities went unfinished, which proved to be critical in the end. The team needs to show its character on Wednesday when we play Clarkson in order to get back on the winning trail.
Â
The Saints outshot the Bombers 5-3 in the first half, and had the only shot on goal. Lee Folger turned away the St. Lawrence effort. Â
Â
90 seconds into the second half the Bombers came out firing with one of their best chances of the day. Jon Kyriakidis found himself with the ball at the six all alone, and forced Woelfinger to get low and make a tough save.Â
Â
A few minutes later, the Bombers caught the Saints on their heels during a counter attack. Kyriakidis collected a through ball and found an unmarked Zackary Dewitt, who calmly pushed the ball past a charging Woelfinger and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Â
With 13 minutes left to play, the Bombers doubled their lead. Ali Kapasi took the ball from the right side and hit a hard, low ball into a congested technical area where Conor Baird deflected the ball across the line to put them up 2-0.
Â
Ithaca outshot the Scarlet and Brown 16-9, and held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The two teams each had four corner-kicks in the game.
Â
Woelfinger made four saves for the Saints, Lee Folger mad three saves for the Bombers as he recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Â
The Saints stay on the road, but will not have to travel far as St. Lawrence will take on Clarkson University at Hantz Field on Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00 p.m.
