First-year midfielder
Emma Casey scored her first two career goals within a 30-second stretch in the second half as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated Bard 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Sandy MacAllasterĀ Field.
The Saints improved to 5-4-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in the Liberty League. The Raptors fell to 1-9-0 and 0-6-0 in conference play.
"We did some really good things, but then nodded off in crucial moments like in the goal we conceded," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "It's nice to be back in the win column, but we have to have more focus and intensity when it matters not just when we feel like it."
The game was a scoreless tie for 65 minutes until Casey scored the first goal of the contest.
Sam Cohen started the play by making a run down the left side of the pitch. Cohen sent in a long cross that was caught by
Keelin Hurtt just outside the box. The captain funneled the ball into
Hope Donoghue, who had her point-blank shot blocked. The rebound found the foot of Casey who tapped it home for the 1-0 lead. Donoghue received her first career point with the assist.
It was
Hannah Dorfman less than 30 seconds later that made a run down the left side of the field. The defender fed a pass forward to
Erin O'Brien, who worked her way to the net. O'Brien made it all the way to the goal line and found Casey, who was in front of the frame. Casey, who had a defender on her back, sidestepped and buried the ball for her second of the game to give the Scarlet and Brown the 2-0 lead. The assist was the first in the career of O'Brien.
Gillian Randall would cut the lead in half for Bard with less than 15 minutes left in regulation. Randall received the ball just over the midfield line and would do the rest by herself. Randall made a run down the left side of the field and made two nice moves around a pair of defenders to get to the goal. Randall placed a perfect shot on goal to beat
Keely Snode and make the game a 2-1 contest.
Snode stopped three shots for the Scarlet and Brown. Madeline Chilton, who started the game stopped six shots in the first half, while Sam Finn saved three of the five shots she faced in the second half.
St. Lawrence had a decisive 22-7 advantage in shots and a 11-4 edge in shots on goal. The Saints had 10 corner kicks, while Bard had just one.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllasterĀ Field tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to take on Vassar College in Liberty League play.
