Julia Gosling scored her sixth goal in the last four games, and Shailynn Snow added an extra attacker tally late in the third period, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team was unable to come back from an early deficit, falling to fourth-ranked Cornell 3-2 in an ECAC Hockey contest on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink in Ithaca.

Jaime Bourbonnais and Grace Graham tallied first-period goals for the Big Red, and Gillis Frechette gave Cornell a 3-1 lead in the second period after Gosling had cut the lead to one.

"What a great game we played today," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "We had great jump from the opening puck drop. It was an even game all around. Cornell was able to execute on one more play than we were, and that was the difference.  We fought for every loose puck and created some fantastic opportunities. (Cornell goaltender Lindsay) Browning was excellent on a couple and a few went right by the open net. Cornell is the measuring stick of the league this year and we played as good of a game as we have played all year. That's about six solid efforts for us in a row."



Bourbonnais gave Cornell a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period, scoring on a rebound on a power play to snap a St. Lawrence streak of 29 straight successful power plays killed.

Graham increased the lead to two goals just three minutes later, snapping a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle high on the short side.

Gosling scored the Saints' first goal of the day to cut the lead to one halfway through the second period, getting around a defender with a toe drag and sniping a backhand five-hole for her eighth goal of the season. Anna Segedi and Kayla Vespa picked up assists on the play.

Frechette restored the two-goal lead five minutes later with a wrist shot from the right circle that St. Lawrence goaltender Lucy Morgan got a piece of but had enough on it to trickle into the net.

Snow capped the scoring with just seven seconds left in the game, putting away a rebound after a shot from the point by Rachel Teslak. Vespa also assisted on the play for her 11th multi-point game of the season.

Morgan made 31 saves for St. Lawrence, while Browning stopped 23 shots for the Big Red. 

St. Lawrence, now 11-11-6 overall, 6-7-3 in ECAC Hockey, will return home next weekend to face Yale and Brown. St. Lawrence will honor women's hockey alumna Gina Kingsbury '04 as part of the Legends of Appleton ceremonies, and the weekend will also serve as the official dedication ceremony for the Appleton Arena renovations.
