Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Fall to Yale, 3-0

Gianna Meloni made 28 saves and Yale scored two goals in a span of just 33 seconds late in the third period to defeat the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 3-0 in an ECAC Hockey contest on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Emma Seitz, Tess Dettling and Lucy Burton scored goals for Yale.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 11-12-6 overall, 6-8-3 in ECAC Hockey. Yale improved to 14-10-0, 11-6-0.

"We couldn't get things settled down," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "Yale did a good job defending on some 2-on-1s and we missed the net on a couple of them."

Seitz gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with just 19.4 seconds left in the first period, taking a feed from Saroya Tinker at the bottom of the left circle and redirecting it into the open net.

Dettling scored a power play goal with less than five minutes to play to extend Yale's lead to two goals, firing the puck past St. Lawrence goaltender Lucy Morgan on a second whack right in front after Morgan had stopped Dettling's first attempt.

"They score a power play goal to get up 2-0 and that's the difference when you're not scoring a lot of goals," said Wells. "We've been playing great defense. At one point we were outshooting them 25-14 and we were down 1-0."

Burton scored the final goal after Yale's Elle Hartje gained possession behind the Saints' net. Hartje passed the puck to Burton who was all alone in front of the net, and Burton one-timed a shot inside the left post to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead with less than four minutes to play.

The Saints outshot Yale 28-19 and had a number of scoring chances, none better than a breakaway bid by Shailynn Snow halfway through the period. With the Saints trailing 1-0, Snow went forehand-backhand-forehand, but Meloni made a sprawling stop with her leg pad.

Lucy Morgan made 16 saves for the Saints, who were 0-for-5 on the power play. Yale was 1-for-3.

St. Lawrence will host Brown on Saturday at 3 p.m.
