Julia Gosling and
Rachel Teslak scored in the third period to break a scoreless deadlock and lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Union College in an ECAC Hockey contest at Frank L. Messa Rink in Schenectady on Tuesday night.
The win moved the Saints ahead of the Dutchwomen into seventh place in the conference standings with 15 points, just one point behind Colgate, who St. Lawrence will face on Friday night in Hamilton.
"That was a solid effort from puck drop to the final horn for us tonight," said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells '92. "(Union goaltender Bella) McKee made sure it stayed close all game. She was outstanding. We didn't let up all game and we were finally rewarded with a lead in the third. Our power play did a nice job to get our second goal and was good all night. That's a big two points for a lot of reasons. The sprint is on now in the ECAC and we will be back at it shortly on Friday."
The Saints outshot Union 45-17, but McKee stymied St. Lawrence with 30 saves in the first two periods, including a number on odd-player rushes. She saved a shot by
Shailynn Snow on a breakaway late in the second period, then covered up after stopping a shot by Gosling on the rebound.
Gosling was finally able to solve McKee right after the first media timeout in the third period, taking a backhand feed from
Kayla Vespa in the slot and firing a wrist shot into the top right corner for her sixth goal of the season. Snow got the play started by creating a turnover behind the Union goal.
Rachel Teslak gave the Saints a 2-0 lead with a power play goal less than four minutes later, sniping a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through traffic just inside the far post. The goal was Teslak's sixth of the year and team-best fourth on the power play. Gosling and
Kristen Guerriero picked up assists on the play.
McKee finished with 43 saves for Union, while
Lucy Morgan made 17 saves for her fourth shutout of the season for St. Lawrence.
The Saints scored on the power play for the third straight game, going 1-for-3, and successfully killed one Union power play to extend their streak of consecutive kills to 26 straight dating back to November 30.
St. Lawrence improved to 11-10-5 overall, 6-6-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Union fell to 5-18-5, 5-8-3.
The Saints go back on the road this weekend to face Colgate on Friday and fourth-ranked Cornell on Saturday.
