Senior midfielder
Kira Murphy scored to lift the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Union in the Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, New York.
St. Lawrence improved to 6-1-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Dutchwomen fell to 3-3-0 and 0-1-0.
In the 84th minute,
Emily Wade found Murphy for the Saints' lone goal and the game winner.
"Solid team effort from sideline, back line and front line today," said head coach
Sinead McSharry. "The players managed the game well especially considering the heat. It was a fun, competitive game to be a part of and the support was second to none. Really proud of this team for continuously finding a way and handling whatever is thrown their way."
Emma Schleimer led the Dutchwomen with two shots on goal.
Samantha Allen and
Cynnie White each played one half in goal for the Saints. Allen stopped four shots, while White made one save. Unions's Alison Sorkenn finished with seven saves.
The Saints outshot Union 19-14 and held an 8-5 lead in shots on goal. The Dutchwomen took four corner kicks to the Saints' two.
The Saints will face Rensselaer in Troy, New York on Saturday, September 28 at 4 p.m.
