Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Strong Second Half Lifts No. 11 Red Dragons Over Saints

Mikey Lanzetta and Anthony Ruggiero scored two goals six minutes apart in the second half to lift 11th-ranked SUNY Cortland to a 3-2 win over the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Cortland, New York.

Matthew Lawlor scored his first career goal put the Saints on the board first in the 44th minute after capitalizing on a Cortland turnover inside the box.

A minute later, Miguel Tunas tied the game 1-1 with a penalty-kick goal.

Lanzetta gave the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute of play with a one timer off the Saints' rebound. Jake Keller then set up Ruggiero, who went one-on-one against a Saints' defender for the goal and the 3-1 lead.

Marvin Sibanda brought the game within one in the 75th minute with a shot into an empty Cortland net. Sam Sapnar and Aidan Callahan assisted on the play.

"Another hard fought game today against a tough Cortland team," said head coach Mike Toshack. "It will certainly make us better and help prepare us for Liberty League play coming up. The team did well to take the lead with an excellent goal, but then with 30 seconds left in the half Cortland scored on the penalty kick to tie the game, which was a tough break for us. But the resilience of the team to keep fighting was again evident today and we look forward to getting back to work and getting ready for Potsdam."

Saints' goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger made four saves, while Cortland's Sean Kelly finished with three.

Both the Saints and the Red Dragons recorded 16 shots, but Cortland held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.

St. Lawrence fell to 2-3 on the season, while Cortland improved to 4-1.

The Saints will take a crosstown trip to SUNY Potsdam to take on the Bears, Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
