A nine-run fourth inning was the difference for Ithaca in a non-conference game against the St. Lawrence baseball team on Tuesday night, as the Bombers defeated the Saints, 9-3, at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York.
Rookie outfielder
Brian Comerford led the Saints at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Andrew Circelli and
William Montgomery also recorded hits in the loss.
St. Lawrence jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, which started off with back-to-back walked to seniors
Anthony Butler and
Joe DeGuardia.
After Butler stole third to put runners on the corners, classmates
Alex Black hit into a fielder's choice RBI, allowing Butler to score for the first run of the day and a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead. DeGuardia was also safe on the play and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Bombers' shortstop.
Montgomery followed with an RBI single through the right side to bring DeGuardia in to score and increase the lead to 2-0.
Starter
Charlie Pacilio as strong early on and struck out two batters through the first three innings, but Ithaca hit three singles and a triple in the first five at-bats of the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead and prompt a pitching change for the Saints.
Both
Kalani Zehr and
Anthony Ferraro pitched in the fourth, during which Ithaca scored nine runs on eight hits with the help of one St. Lawrence error to put the game out of reach.
The Saints got one back in the fifth when Circelli singled up the middle to drive in Comerford and make it 9-3, but that would be as close as they'd get.
Ithaca outhit the Saints 15-5 on Tuesday night, with five extra-base hits.
The Bombers started former Saint
Emmett Dunn on the mound, who went 7.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts against his former team.
Ferraro finished the game for the Saints and pitched a season-high 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing three hits and striking out six, which was also a season high for the sophomore.
