No. 19 Saints Rally to Top Plattsburgh, 10-7

The No. 19 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals in the second half to rally towards a 10-7 non-conference win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday night at North Country Field.

Junior Mike Donnelly led the Scarlet and Brown with three goals, while Brian Cunningham tallied two goals and an assist and Conor Caffrey added two goals for the Saints. Jack Hennessey notched a goal and an assist, while Kyle Gagne and Zachary Prime each scored once. Prime finished with a team-best six ground balls and went 11-for-21 at the faceoff dot. Tyler Burns and Brian Gannon each caused three turnovers, while Zachary Ettinghausen and Matt Ellis each caused two.

Plattsburgh came out firing on all cylinders. Jake Carroll recorded the first Cardinals' goal just one minute and 58 seconds into play and Plattsburgh worked to build a 6-1 lead over the Saints with 10:19 remaining in the second quarter. Stephen Kane and Jack Mullen each recorded man-up goals on the five-goal run.

Donnelly recorded back-to-back goals to bring the Saints within three, but Kane added his second of the game giving Plattsburgh a 7-3 advantage at halftime.

The tables turned after the break as the Saints outscored the Cardinals 7-0 to tie the game and claim their eighth win of the season.

Caffrey kicked off the second half scoring with 11:28 to play, and eight seconds later off the faceoff, Donnelly scored on a quick pass from Cunningham. Caffrey tallied his second of the game at 9:49 and Hennessey tied the game, 7-7, with 5:25 to play in the third. Ben Murtagh fed Cunningham for the game-winning goal with 1:14 to play in the third.

"Well we certainly dug a hole for ourselves in the first half and a lot of that had to do with Plattsburgh's energy and execution," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93 P'22. "I was really happy with the team's response after halftime, which we will try to build on as we get back into conference play."
 
 
 
Kane and Mullen led Plattsburgh with two goals, one ground ball and one caused turnover each. Carroll recorded a goal and an assist, while Kevin Litchauer and James Sherwood each scored once. Kyle Smith posted a team-best six ground balls and caused four turnovers.
 
Alex Terry and Jordan Eichholz shared time in net against the Cardinals. Terry finished with three saves, while Eichholz made one and Joe Falco finished with 11 saves for Plattsburgh.
 
The Saints outshot the Cardinals 36-21 and held a 21-11 advantage in shots on goal. St. Lawrence also edged Plattsburgh in ground balls, 25-22. The Cardinals capitalized on 2-of-5 man-up opportunities.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-1 on the season, well Plattsburgh fell to 4-5 overall.

The Saints will return to Liberty League play as they travel to Skidmore on Saturday, April 6. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
