Juniors
Mike Donnelly and
Harrison Koch scored two goals each to lead the No. 19 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to an 11-4 Liberty League win over Skidmore on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Donnelly also recorded two assists for three points on the day, while
Jack Hennessey notched a goal, three assists and three ground balls for the Saints.
Ben Murtagh,
Brett Williams,
Kyle Gagne,
Sam Martin,
Drew Wyman and
Alex Mapstone also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Zachary Prime dominated the faceoff dot, going 12-for-14, and grabbed a team-best six ground balls, while
Liam Doherty went 3-for-3 and seven Saints each caused one turnover. Wyman recorded his first goal of the season in today's win. Â
The Saints struck first, building a quick 3-0 lead over the Thoroughbreds with goals from Hennessey, Koch and Gagne. Hudson Miller scored the first for Skidmore, but was followed up by Martin and Williams to give the Scarlet and Brown a 5-1 lead after the first quarter.
Caffrey fed Donnelly for a man-up goal to kick off scoring in the second frame, as St. Lawrence outscored the Thoroughbreds 3-1 in the second quarter to hold an 8-2 lead at halftime.
Koch recorded his second man-up goal of the game and his ninth of the season, while Donnelly added his second of the game and 24th goal of the season and Mapstone scored off the quick pass from
Stew Hutchinson down the stretch to help seal the win for the Saints.
"It was a solid road win today," said head coach
Mike Mahoney '93 P'22. "We focused on getting off to a good start, which I felt we did today and it was also nice to see balanced scoring as well."
Jason Shlonsky led Skidmore with two goals, while Miller recorded a goal and an assist and Eric Megnia scored once for the Thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds' goalkeeper Tim Rahill grabbed a team-best four ground balls, while four different members of the Skidmore squad each caused one turnover.
All three Saints' goalkeepers saw action between the pipes this afternoon.
Alex Terry recorded the win with eight saves, while
Jordan Eichholz and
William Helm each recorded one save. Rahill finished with 18 saves for the Thoroughbreds. Terry currently ranks second in Division III with a 5.82 goals against average.
St. Lawrence outshot Skidmore 46-26 and finished with a 29-14 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints are currently ranked third in Division III in scoring defense, only allowing 6.33 goals per game, held the Thoroughbreds to just four goals and capitalized on 3-of-5 man-up opportunities.
St. Lawrence improved to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in Liberty League play, while Skidmore fell to 3-8 and 0-5.
The Saints will host Route-11 rival Clarkson on Wednesday, April 10. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
