Slater Throws No-Hitter; Armijo Breaks Stolen Base Record in Sweep at SUNY Canton

Gabby Slater threw the fourth no-hitter in program history, and Taylor Armijo broke a 19-year-old school record for stolen bases in a season to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a sweep of SUNY Canton at SUNY Canton Softball Field on Thursday afternoon, 9-1 and 16-0.

Slater allowed just two base runners in a five-inning run-rule shortened game in the second game. She walked a batter in the second inning and hit a batter in the third. She struck out five, had four fly ball outs and six ground ball outs.

Armijo stole three bases in both games to bring her season total to 29, four more than St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Famer Meredith Eisenhut '03 stole in the Saints' inaugural season in 2000.

The Saints improved to 18-14 overall and will close the season with a Liberty League doubleheader at Rensselaer on Saturday at 2 p.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Canton, but were moved to Troy due to inclement weather forecast for the North Country.

St. Lawrence 9, SUNY Canton 1 (6 innings)
Elle Gray was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Saints in the first game.

The first seven batters of the game reached base for the Saints in the top of the first, and the first four scored, thanks to an RBI double by Gray, a fielder's choice ground ball by Sofia Adams, and RBI single by McKailey Lyndaker and a bases loaded walk by Slater.

Jaedyn Ossont trimmed the lead to three with a solo home run over the left field fence in the third inning, but the Saints scored three runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to clinch the victory via the eight-run rule.

Caitlyn Fuss scored on an error on a hard hit ball to left by Armijo, Gray hit an RBI double to score Armijo and later scored on an error to account for the Saints' runs in the fifth inning. Armijo and Gray added RBI singles in the sixth.

Skylar Hein and Lyndaker were both 2-for-4 for the Saints, while Ossont was 2-for-2.

Caroline Young struck out three and did not issue a walk to earn her 10th victory of the season. She got out of a jam with one out in the second with Roos on second and third, fielding a ground ball and catching the runner at third trying to score, then inducing a ground ball the third base to end the inning. She also turned a double play on a lineout to end the fifth and ended the game with a backhanded stab on another line drive in the bottom of the sixth.

Kayla Chavarri took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts and five walks in six innings.

St. Lawrence 16, SUNY Canton 0 (5 innings)
Slater never allowed a runner to advance beyond first base to record St. Lawrence's first no-hitter since Kyle Plimpton '15 recorded an eight-inning no-hitter against Mount Saint Mary in 2012. She also contributed to the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Saints scored in every inning and put the game away with a 10-run third inning.

Armijo was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three stolen bases, while Hein and Lyndaker were both 2-for-4. Seven different players recorded at least one hit in the second game, as the Saints had 13 hits in five innings.

Alaina Beane threw a complete game for the Roos, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts and two walks. SUNY Canton committed seven errors, while the Saints had their eighth clean game of the year.
