Saints Come Back in Seventh, but Hamilton Walks Off For Win

The St. Lawrence baseball team came all the way back from a 10-1 deficit to tie the game at 10-10 in the top of the seventh inning, but Hamilton scored on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the frame to edge the Saints 11-10 on Tuesday evening in Clinton, New York.

The game was originally scheduled for nine innings, but both staffs agreed to call it after seven on account of rain and darkness.

William Montgomery scored the game-tying run on a single up the middle by Joe DeGuardia to cap off a six-run seventh for the Saints.

DeGuardia, Taylor Digilio, Andrew Circelli and Alex Black each finished with two RBI against the Continentals, while Digilio (1-for-3) also added a pair of runs scored and Circelli led the Saints with two hits (2-for-4).

The Saints trailed 8-0 after two innings and got their first run of the game in the top of the third, as a double-play ball from Nicholas Butler with the bases loaded allowed Jeremy Gerringer to score to make it 8-1.

In the fourth, Matt Cappelletti hit a home run to left for Hamilton to push the lead to 10-1 for the home team, but the Saints started to chip away in the fifth with their first of nine unanswered.

Black's two RBI single up the middle in the top of the fifth drove in DeGuardia and Circelli to but the deficit to 10-3, before and RBI walk to DeGuardia in the sixth brought in the Saints' fourth run.

St. Lawrence went to work in the seventh and was issued three straight walks to lead off the inning and load the bases, and then connected for four straight hits with one out to tie the game.

Digilio started the hit parade with a two-run single to right and Nicholas Butler followed with an RBI single through the left side as the Saints' halved the deficit and pulled within three runs at 10-7.

A double to left center by Circelli plated both Digilio and Butler, setting up DeGuardia's single that brought Montogomery – who pinch-ran for Circelli – home to tie the game at 10-10.

Reliever Anthony Ferraro took the loss on Tuesday, as he entered to start the fifth inning and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts. He issued the leadoff walk to Matt Cappelletti in the bottom of the seventh and Cappelletti stole second, and advanced the next two bases on passed balls to help Hamilton secure the non-conference win.

Rookie Andrew Matthews started on the mound for St. Lawrence and pitched just one inning, allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits. Charlie Pacilio was solid in his relief appearance, throwing three innings and allowing just two runs on four hits.

Hamilton used six pitchers in the win, with Kenny Gray earning the win, despite allowing three runs on four hits in the seventh.
