Saints Drop Pair on Day 5 of Spring Break Trip

The St. Lawrence University softball team ran into a pair of hot pitchers on Wednesday, managing just five hits in a 6-1 loss to Manchester University in the first game before being no-hit by Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Haley Barnes in a five-inning 8-0 loss at Legends Way in Clermont, Florida.

The Saints, who entered the day on a six-game winning streak, fell to 7-3 and will finish up their spring break trip with games against Kalamazoo and St. Norbert on Friday.

Manchester 6, St. Lawrence 1
Lizzie Smith scattered five hits and allowed just one run for a complete game victory in the circle for the Spartans in the first game. She struck out two and did not walk a batter for Manchester, which took advantage of a five-run fourth inning to come from behind to beat the Saints.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Taylor Armijo led off the game with a single past the third baseman's outstretched glove, then stole her ninth base of the season — one shy of her career high — before moving to third on a groundout, then scoring on an RBI groundout by Angelina Carney.

Manchester took advantage of a leadoff walk in the third, with Katelynn Skeens dropping a single into left center to score Kendal Torrence from second base to tie the score 1-1.

The Spartans had four hits, worked two walks and one hit batter to produce five runs in the fourth. Haley Perez and Skeens had RBI singles, and Krystal Sellers worked a bases loaded walk and Sydney Thompson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push runs across the plate. Alexis Mokos added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.

Armijo, Elle Gray, Sofia Adams, McKailey Lyndaker and Carolyn Holran had hits for the Saints.

Gabby Slater took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three-plus innings of work. Lyndaker finished up the game for the Saints, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks.

Records: St. Lawrence (7-2); Manchester (3-2).

UW-Stevens Point 8, St. Lawrence 0 (5 innings)
The Saints managed just two base runners against the Pointers in their second game of the day, with Slater working a walk to lead off the third inning, and Holran being hit by a pitch in the next at bat. But Barnes retired the next nine batters for a five-inning no-hitter, finishing with six strikeouts.

Stevens Point scored four runs in the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. Maddie Candre got the Pointers on the board with a two-run triple to center field, then scored on a triple by Ashley Cohen that stayed just fair down the right field line. Lauren Luedtke then hit a ball just fair down the left field line to score Cohen.

Rachael Wakefield hit a sacrifice fly to tack on one more run in the fifth, and Luedtke drove in her second run of the game with an RBI groundout in the fifth. Barnes capped the scoring with a two-run double to center later in the frame.

Caroline Young took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk in 2.2 innings. Lyndaker allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits over the final 2.1, striking out three and walking one.

Records: St. Lawrence (7-3); UWSP (6-7).
