Ibadat Javed's three-set win at No. 6 clinched a win for the St. Lawrence women's tennis team in the Saints' morning match against Stevens, 7-2. The Saints fell to Bethel University, 9-0, in the afternoon match to split the day at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Javed's match was one of three to go three sets on Wednesday, as
Maddie Nasch's match at No. 4 and
Carly Jefferson's at No. 5 also required a superbreaker.
Javed and Stevens' Nicole Badalyan traded 6-1 wins in the first two sets, before Javed took the breaker 10-4 for the Saints. For Jefferson, she won the first set 6-3 before falling to Makenna Sargis 6-0 in the second. The Saints' senior captain responded well though, edging Sargis 10-8 in third set for the win.
Nasch was outlasted by Steven's Alexis Fuda, 10-7, in their superbreaker at No. 4.
Caroline Reilly,
Katherine Apt and
Christina Ryan earned 2-0 wins in singles in the morning match, while Reilly and Ryan as well as Nasch and Apt combined for wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
In the afternoon match, Bethel edged the Saints in a pair of tiebreaks; first at No. 2 doubles and again at No. 5 singles, while Jefferson was also on the losing end of a three-set battle at No. 6 when she was beaten 10-8 in the superbreaker by Meghan Schuler.
