The St. Lawrence women's tennis team opened its spring break trip in Orlando, Florida with a sweep of doubles in its first match, but North Central came back to take five of six singles matches and hand the Saints a 5-4 loss on Sunday evening.
While the Saints' top pairing of
Katherine Apt and
Caroline Reilly rolled to an 8-3 win at No. 1,
Christina Ryan and
Grace van Tartwijk battled for an 8-7 (2) tiebreak win at No. 2 over North Central's Diana Barcelata and Katie McGraw.
Carly Jefferson and
Maddie Nasch also helped St. Lawrence take a 3-0 lead in the match heading into singles with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Marie Bank was the lone winner for the Saints in singles play, as she edged Morgan House 6-4 7-5 at No. 5
First-year players
Christina Ryan and
Ibadat Javed both posted first-set wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively, before falling 6-4 in their second set matchups with the Cardinals. For Ryan, she was beaten in a third-set tiebreak 7-6 (1) by Barcelata. Javed dropped her third set against Tiffany Smolik, 6-3, in the loss.
