Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Swept by St. Joseph's

Senior Anthony Butler combined to go 4-for-7 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored for the St. Lawrence baseball team on Sunday afternoon, but the Saints dropped both games of a doubleheader to St. Joseph's (L.I.) in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Golden Eagles used an eight-run rally in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 17-12 win in the first game, before also edging the Saints 3-1 in the nightcap.

Evan O'Keeffe (4-for-5) had a team-best four hits and also scored a pair of runs in game one's slugfest, while Taylor Digilio, Nicholas Butler, Andrew Circelli, Joe DeGuardia and Alex Black finished with two hits apiece.

Anthony Butler scored the team's only run in game two on a sacrifice fly by Circelli.

Game 1 –
St. Lawrence outhit St. Joseph's 19-15 in Sunday's opener, which featured six lead changes, but four errors proved to be costly for the Saints, as three of the Golden Eagles eight runs in the top of the seventh inning were unearned.

Junior Caleb Clarke pitched 3.1 innings on the mound for the Saints, allowing seven runs on six hits with one strikeout. Charlie Pacilio threw 0.2 innings in relief, while newcomers Liam Reiner and Kalani Zehr made their first appearances of the season as well.

Reiner took the loss in game one, allowing five runs, including four earned, on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. He also recorded two strikeouts.

After trading runs in the first and second innings, the Saints scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead, as Butler drilled a two-run single to right center and Andrew Circelli hit an RBI single to left.

The lead was short-lived, though, as the Golden Eagles put up a seven spot in the top of the fourth inning with the help of a grand slam off the bat of Jesse Nakashian to retake the lead 9-4.

St. Lawrence chipped away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on six hits to cut the deficit to one run at 9-8.

Butler and Circelli sparked the rally again for the Saints, as Butler doubled to center to bring O'Keeffe as the first run of the inning, and Circelli followed with a double of his own in the next at bat to score Butler.

With two outs, the Saints tacked on two more with an RBI single for Comerford followed by an RBI groundout by Taylor Digilio.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints got back-to-back RBI singles from seniors Joe DeGuardia and Alex Black to take a 10-9 lead into the seventh.

But once again, the Golden Eagles answered in a big way with eight runs on six hits and four errors by the Saints to take a 17-10 lead.

In their last at-bats, St. Lawrence managed to put two across with another two-RBI double by Anthony Butler, but left two runners on base to end the game.

Game 2 –
Unlike the first game of the day, game two proved to be a pitcher's duel, as St. Lawrence starter Patrick Greenan and St. Joseph's Austin Turner allowed just six hits apiece.

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth before increasing their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

St. Lawrence finally got on the board in the top of sixth with Circelli's sacrifice fly to center field, but couldn't get any more off of Turner, who threw a complete game for St. Joseph's.

For the Saints, Greenan pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Ryan Carson pitched the sixth inning in relief and walked one batter, struck out another and did not allow a hit.

Alex Black hit a two-out, pinch-hit triple to right center in the top of the seventh for the Saints, but was stranded on third to end the game.
