Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Close Fall Semester with Win Over Roos

Junior Katie Frederick nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks, to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to an 80-29 win over SUNY Canton, closing out the fall semester, on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.

Frederick, who shot 10-for-14 from the floor and tallied her fourth double-double of the season, recorded a season-high in points and rebounds and finished with a career-best seven blocks, while adding six assists and one steal. Ava McCann finished with 15 points for the Saints, while Annabella Pugliese and Olivia Barringer each added 12. Pugliese recorded her first double-double on the season with 11 rebounds. Barringer and Nicole Jeffrey each grabbed seven rebounds, while Jeffrey recorded six assists and Olivia Middleton tallied three steals.

"I really liked the way we moved the ball today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We worked hard in practice on looking through our options in zone offense and we did a great job of going through our progressions in the first half. Our assist total was very high and our posts did an excellent job of passing to one another and to our guards who then made shots."

With a strong start out of the gate, the Saints outscored the Roos 27-5 in the first 10 minutes of play and shot 9-for-17 from the floor and 5-for-9 from the arc in the second quarter to take a 52-12 lead at halftime.

The Saints continued to increase their lead, outscoring SUNY Canton 15-2 in the third frame. The Roos managed to outscore the Saints 15-13 in the fourth quarter, but were unable to overcome the deficit.

Autumn Watkins led SUNY Canton with six points, while Jeanna Manning grabbed six rebounds. Watkins finished with five rebounds, while Autumn Kunes added five points for the Roos.

"We had a great December," Roiger added. "Three conference games on the road and then SUNY-Canton at home and we finished the month 3-1.  More importantly, we really started playing some good basketball on both ends of the floor. Break will be good for us as we get rest and get some players healthy, and then I'm anxious to get started again after Christmas."

The Saints combined to shoot 45.3 percent from the floor.

St. Lawrence improved to 5-4 on the season, while SUNY Canton fell to 0-10.

The Saints will return to action on the road, facing Elmira on Monday, January 6 at 5 p.m.
