Ava McCann shot 5-for-10 from the arc and
Katie Frederick grabbed a season-high 23 rebounds to help guide the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 73-55 win over Elmira on Monday night in Elmira, New York.
Frederick's 23 rebounds in tonight's game tied the Saints' single-game record currently held and matched by Linda Donalson vs. Plattsburgh in 1983 and Tara Breen and Sue Dupuis vs. Alfred in 1991.Â
With the win, the Saints recorded their fourth straight win and first of 2020 to improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Soaring Eagles fell to 2-9.
McCann also shot 7-for-14 from the floor to record a season-best 19 points, while Frederick added 16 points and
Dylan Watkiss finished with 11. Watkiss and
Erin Kumler recorded two steals each, while
Olivia Middleton tallied five assists and Frederick recorded two blocks.
After a quick back-and-forth battle, the Saints pulled away to a 19-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. A 3-point play from Middleton and a layup from McCann increased the Scarlet and Brown's lead to double digits in the opening minutes of the second quarter. St. Lawrence continued to maintain its advantage and led 39-25 at halftime.
The Saints outscored the Soaring Eagles 20-15 in the third and held their largest lead of the game, with a 21-point spread, with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Elmira looked to rally in the final 10 minutes of play and edged the Saints 15-14, but were unable to overcome an early deficit.
"This was a nice team effort today," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "I thought Elmira played really well and presented a challenge for us. Their changing defenses confused us for a while, but then we settled in and ran some good offense. It's nice to be back near full strength on our roster. We haven't been able to adequately rest our players this year, but today we kept a fresh group on the floor for the entire game."

Taylor Johnson shot 3-for-7 from the arc and led Elmira with 11 points, while Taylor Albrecht recorded a team-best seven rebounds. Four members of the Soaring Eagles squad finished with three assists each, while five different members each tallied one steal.
St. Lawrence shot 41.4 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from 3-point range and recorded 15 points off turnovers and 23 points off the bench. The Saints held Elmira to 34.9 percent on the floor and 30.4 percent from the arc.
The Saints will return to Liberty League play on the road at Vassar and Bard this weekend. Game times are set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
