Katie Frederick scored 19 points to lead a trio of double-digit scorers, as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team defeated Clarkson 74-44 in Liberty League action on Tuesday night in Potsdam, New York.
Frederick shot 8-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line and added nine rebounds and two blocks for the Saints, while
Olivia Barringer shot 5-for-5 from the floor to add 11 points and
Ava McCann finished with 10. McCann and
Nicole Jeffrey each grabbed six rebounds and recorded four assists.
After an early battle for the lead, back-to-back jumpers from
Caroline Rodi and
Annabella Pugliese put the Saints up 12-7 after the first quarter.
St. Lawrence nearly doubled the score of the Golden Knights in the second quarter and pulled ahead to a 37-22 lead at halftime.
The Saints opened the third frame on a 10-4 run to take a 21-point lead over Clarkson on a jumper from McCann. A 3-pointer from
Olivia Middleton increased the Saints lead to 60-32 with 1:37 remaining.
The Saints continued to outscore the Golden Knight in the fourth quarter for the win.
"We really showed up today and played our best game of the season thus far," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We played outstanding defense against some talented players and utilized our offense well in all aspects - inside, from the perimeter, and attacking the basket. This young team is learning every game and getting better. That's our only goal this year, just keep working and improving every day."
Hannah Earl led the Golden Knights with 14 points and six rebounds, while Molly Stewart added 12 points, two blocks and two steals. Emma Buonanno and Rachel Marion each recorded five rebounds for Clarkson.
The Saints shot 53.6 percent from the floor and worked hard on defense to hold Clarkson to just 28.8 percent.
Both teams moved to 4-4 on the season, while the Saints improved to 2-1 in conference play and Clarkson fell to 0-3.
St. Lawrence is set to host SUNY Canton on Saturday, December 14 at 1 p.m.
