Isabel Silvia notched her sixth goal of the season and the game winner, helping the fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over No. 5 Rensselaer in the first round of the Liberty League tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Julia Mulhern slid a low pass to Silvia just outside the 8-yard box, which Silvia skipped off the hands of Engineers' goalkeeper Joey Lyons for the 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute of play.
Katie Clemmer spun around and scored her third of the season with a shot to the top-right corner from about 20 yards out.
Hannah Arment assisted on the play.
"Solid all round effort," said head coach
Sinead McSharry. "I'm really pumped for this group. They just really enjoy soccer and being a part of this team. They all played a part in making this happen and we are feeling good about the weekend."
Whitney Wisnom led Rensselaer with three shots and two shots on goal.
Samantha Allen and
Cynnie White split time in net for the Saints. White recorded four saves and the Saints finished with one team save, while Lyons mafe seven saves for the Engineers.
The Saints outshot the Engineers 12-9 and posted a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
RPI took eight corner kicks to the Saints' four.
St. Lawrence will advance to the Liberty League semifinals to face top-seeded William Smith in Geneva, New York on Saturday, November 9 at 11 a.m.
