Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Top-Ranked Herons Shutout Saints in League Semifinals

Top-seeded William Smith scored two goals in the first half en route to a 2-0 win over the fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University women's soccer team in game one of the Liberty League semifinals on Saturday morning in Geneva, New York.

The Herons entered the tournament as the top seed and entered the weekend ranked second nationally, moving to 15-1-1 on the season, while the Saints closed the season 11-5-0.

Julia Keogh put the Herons on the board in the 20th minute of play. Sheila McQuillen and Amanda Adams assisted on the play.

Mariah Deschino chipped a shot over Saints' goalkeeper Samantha Allen for the Herons second goal at 28:53.

"I'm grateful for this team and for all of the hard work that this team has put in over the past year to get us where we are today," said head coach Sinead McSharry. "We play good soccer, we're strong, resilient and fit. Our depth has helped us immensely and I think that shows in our ability to rely on various goal scorers game to game. Today wasn't our day, but we kept playing and we were a threat. A credit to the seniors for the heart they have given this team."

Madelyn Sumple tallied a shot on goal for St. Lawrence, while Allen and Cynnie White each recorded one save for the Saints. William Smith's Amanda Kesler also finished with one save.

The Herons outshot the Saints 16-4 and held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal, while also taking 10 corner kicks to the Saints' one.

William Smith will advance to the championship game and face the winner of the second semifinal match between No. 2 RIT and No. 3 Vassar.
