Five members of the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team recorded double digits, but the Saints fell to SUNY Canton, 97-87, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Roos House in Canton, New York.
Brandon Arnold shot 7-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-6 from 3-point range to lead the Saints with 18 points, while
Trent Adamson,
Chris Jeffrey,
Luke Hicks and
Andrew Geschickter all recorded 15 points. Jeffrey grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Adamson and Hicks grabbed six rebounds each. Hicks added four assists for the Saints, while
Cale Sargent totaled three steals.
The Saints grabbed an early lead, but the Roos fought back, tying the game at 21 and pushing their lead to 50-43 by halftime.
The Roos opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 62-48 lead over the Saints.
Juztin Chambers-Phillips landed a 3-pointer to put SUNY Canton up 75-55 with just over 10 minutes to play in the second half.
The Saints worked to cut into SUNY Canton's lead and a 3-pointer from Arnold pulled the Saints within seven, and Adamson shot 2-for-2 from the line to bring the Saints within three (86-83).
The Roos shot 9-for-9 from the line and a jumper from Danny Santana, extended SUNY Canton's lead back to double digits for the win. Â
"Canton played great," said head coach
Chris Downs. "They shot the ball as well as any team we'll see all year and they have continued to make great strides in their men's basketball program. Coach Senthill, Randy Sieminski and Nate Hart have made it a priority for Canton basketball to be great. We're excited to see where this rivalry will go in the future."
Santana led the Roos shooting 9-for-18 from the floor and 6-for-15 from the arc for a team-high 28 points. Chambers-Phillips added 23 points, while Andrew Fitch finished with 14 and Joseph Werner and Kahdean Bennett each added 10. Fitch and Werner recorded a double-double finishing with 15 and 12 rebounds, respectively. Bennett added five assists and three steals for SUNY Canton.
SUNY Canton shot 49.3 percent from the floor and 41.5 percent from the arc to the Saints 44.3 and 33.3 percent.
The Saints fell to 0-3 on the season, while the Roos improved to 4-3 overall.
The Saints will head home for Thanksgiving break and return to Burkman Gymnasium to host Oswego State on December 2 at 7:30 p.m.
