Trent Adamson totaled 21 points, and scored the final two layups in overtime, to lift the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to an 83-82 win over No. 25 Oswego State in non-conference play at Burkman Gymnasium Monday night.
Adamson, who shot 10-for-12 from the floor, added a team-high 13 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double, and finished with two blocks and two steals for the Saints.
Andrew Geschickter and
Cale Sargent scored 15 points apiece, while
Brandon Arnold added 10.
Chris Jeffrey finished with six rebounds, while Geschickter and Sargent also grabbed two steals for the Scarlet and Brown.
After an early lead from the Lakers, the Saints took a 21-20 lead off a 3-pointer from Sargent with 10:16 to play in the first half and worked to build a double-digit lead over the Lakers, with a 12-0 run, capped by a dunk from Adamson.
Oswego pushed the game back within single digits, as the Saints held a 39-36 edge at halftime.
The Saints maintained a slight lead through the majority of the second half, but a layup from Jeremiah Sparks put the Lakers up 71-70 with 3:25 remaining. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Arnold and Sargent pushed the Saints lead back to three (76-73), but Sparks shot 3-for-3 from the line to force a 76-76 tie and overtime.
Arnold nailed a 3-pointer to open the five-minute overtime period and Adamson finished off two layups, to give the Saints their first win of the season.
"We're very happy we were able to get out with the win tonight," said head coach
Chris Downs. "To be able to compete at all with a program like Oswego, under head coach Jason Leone, who has arguably the premier program in the region was a special moment for our team."
Sparks shot 11-for-27 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the arc to lead the Lakers with 27 points. Sparks also recorded a double-double with ten rebounds. Brandan Gartland finished with 19 points, while Joe Sullivan scored 16 points and grabbed a team-best 16 rebounds. Gartland, Sullivan and Kaleb Cook each recorded two steals for Oswego.
St. Lawrence shot 57.4 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from 3-point range for its best shooting of the season thus far. The Saints' defense held Oswego to just 37.0 percent from the floor and 28.9 percent from the arc.
St. Lawrence improved to 1-3 overall, while the Lakers fell to 4-1.
The Saints will open league play in the Capitol District when they face Rensselaer on December 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Union on December 7 at 2 p.m.
