Brandon Arnold and
Luke Hicks netted 17 points and
Chris Jeffrey recorded his first career double-double, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Plattsburgh State 89-84 in non-conference play on Tuesday evening in Plattsburgh, New York.
Hicks recorded six rebounds, while Arnold shot 3-for-7 from the arc. First-years
Trent Adamson and
Andrew Geschickter each finished with 14 points. Geschickter shot 5-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-8 from 3-point range, Adamson added nine rebounds, and Jeffrey recorded 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Saints took off to an early lead, edging the Cardinals 11-3 on a layup from Adamson. The Cardinals tied the game at 17 and both teams battled through five more ties, before the Scarlet and Brown took a five-point lead with 4:44 to play in the first half. The Saints managed a slight edge, leading 41-40 at halftime.
The Cardinals pushed back and extended their lead to double figures with just under 15 minutes to play in the second half. The Saints made strides on a 10-1 run to bring the game back within one with 25 seconds to play, but the Cardinals shot 4-for-4 from the line to seal the win.
"We made some strides tonight," said head coach
Chris Downs. "But we need to address our turnover issue and we need to make our free throws. You can't win on the road against another college team when you shoot 3-for-12 from the line and turn the ball over 20 times."
The Cardinals finished with five double-figure scorers, with Cameron Ness finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Nick DeAngelis went 4-for-9 from the arc and led Plattsburgh State with 20 points, while Travis Cox, Axel Rodriguez and Erik Salo each recorded three steals.
St. Lawrence shot 50.7 percent from the floor, but only 25 percent from the line, while the Cardinals managed 42.7 percent from the floor and 61.9 percent from the line.
The Cardinals improved to 2-1, while St. Lawrence fell to 0-2.
The Saints will play neighboring SUNY Canton on Tuesday, November 26, before heading home on Thanksgiving break.
