First-year
Tyler Potter scored both goals as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated Ithaca 2-1 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Â
St. Lawrence improved to 8-1-0 on the season and remain undefeated in league play at 3-0-0, while Ithaca fell to 6-4-1 and 1-2-0.
Â
Potter scored her first of the game after capitalizing on a bobble in front of the Ithaca goal in the 47th minute of play.
Julia Mulhern and
Isabel Silvia assisted on the play.
Â
Potter netted her second of the game and fifth of the season off a long pass from
Kira Murphy to put the Saints up 2-0 just over 10 minutes later.
Â
Ithaca's Ally Christman scored off the rebound in the 67th minute to bring the game within one, but the Saints would hold the Bombers to just two shots in the final 23 minutes for the win.
Â
"If there was ever a game that illustrated the importance of the choices you make in the off-season then it was this one," said head coach
Sinead McSharry. "I'm so proud of this team's ability to keep the faith, support one another and have a burning desire to win, especially against a good Ithaca team. It takes a lot of guts to go out there and play hard every second, but it takes character to do that in the 10-months when you're away from soccer and that's exactly what this team did. The support today was unreal, so again, we would like to applaud our Saints' family near and far for sticking with us during those intense moments!"
Saint's goalkeeper
Samantha Allen made nine saves, while Sara Jakobsze finished with two.
The Bombers outshot the Saints 19-10, including 10-4 in shots on goal.
St. Lawrence will travel to RIT to face the Tigers on Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m.
