Two first half goals from the Tigers, lifted RIT to a 2-0 win over the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, New York.
Christine Cataldo-Smith put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 12th minute, with a header into the left corner, off the corner kick from Abbey Saia.
Maggie Hoey extended RIT's lead to 2-0, after capitalizing on a Saints' deflection, in the 28th minute of play and the Tiger's were able to hold off the Saints through the remainder of the first and second halves for the shutout win.
Julia Mulhern led the Saints with three shots on goal, while
Emily Wade,
Morgan Ryan,
Isabel Silvia,
Natani Kent-Earle and
Olivia Goodwine each added one.
"Brilliant second half, but a not-so-brilliant first half," said head coach
Sinead McSharry. "But the team never quit, and got better as the game went on, we just couldn't put it away. I'm proud of this team's growth and perseverance. RIT was a superb team and brought an intensity that we hadn't come up against prior to this. I think we've learned a lot about ourselves to take into next week."
Samantha Allen recorded one saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Alyssa Salls made eight saves for RIT.
The Saints outshot the Tigers 11-9 and posted an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. RIT took four corner kicks to the Saints' three.
St. Lawrence fell to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Tigers improved to 8-3 and 3-1.
The Saints will host Vassar and Bard at home on October 18 and 19, respectively.
