The RIT Tigers outscored the Saints 43-22 in the second half to top the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team 72-51 in Liberty League play on Friday night in Rochester, New York.
First-year
Ava McCann shot 4-for-9 from the arc to lead the Saints with 14 points, while
Marlee Gunn added eight points and Chelsea VanTassel and
Katie Frederick grabbed a team-high six rebounds each.
St. Lawrence took a slight lead to open the first quarter, but the Tigers quickly gained control after a 3-pointer from Brooke Stanley just three minutes into play. Sabrina Wolfe and Gunn traded 3-pointers, but it was the Tigers that claimed an 18-13 edge after the first frame.
A 3-pointer from
Dylan Watkiss gave the Saints back their lead early in the second quarter and changed the lead for the third time, but Stanley quickly rallied with a jumper to tie the game 20-20. After one more tie and another lead change down the stretch, RIT and the Saints remained tied at 29 at halftime.
RIT claimed a 36-34 advantage with 6:03 to play in the third quarter and extended its lead to 43-39 on back-to-back-to-back jumpers from Stanley. The Tigers ran away with the win, after outscoring the Saints 43-22 in the second half.
Stanley led the Tigers with 21 points, shooting 10-for-18 from the floor, while Wolfe posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for RIT. Alyssa Juergens rounded out the Tigers top-3 scorers with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds and seven steals.
RIT shot a combined 45.6 percent from the floor to the Saints' 38.5 percent. The Tigers also scored 30 points off turnovers and 16 points of the bench, while St. Lawrence recorded 28 points off the bench.
The Saints fell to 6-9 on the season and 3-5 in conference play, while RIT snapped a six-game slide and improved to 9-6 and 4-4.
St. Lawrence will face William Smith in Geneva, New York tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
