Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Capture Route-11 Rivalry Win Over Clarkson

The No. 22 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team got off to a 1-0 lead on a Clarkson own goal and senior captain Brendan McNamee scored to lift the Saints to a 2-0 win over the Golden Knights in Liberty League play on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

McNamee led the Saints with five shots, two shots on goal and one goal, while Jethro Dede assisted McNamee on the play.

John Furcick looked to put the Golden Knights on the board early but Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith came up big to keep Clarkson scoreless. Charlton Kelly had a strong chance of his own as he curved a shot just wide of the left post at 17:29.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead off an own goal from the Golden Knights in the 37th minute of play.

At the break, Clarkson held an 8-5 shot advantage over the Saints.

The Golden Knights had two quality chances after they rang the post, but were called offside in the 56th minute and Drew Lewis sent a shot just over the crossbar about five minutes later.

Dede sent a feed into the box to McNamee, who fired a low shot past Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs for the Saints' second goal in the 68th minute.

"We had another good game against a well coached team and always tough rivalry game with Clarkson," said head coach Mike Toshack. "The team played very well as a unit, working hard both defensively and offensively and I was especially happy with the substitutes that came in off the bench. It's always good to keep a clean sheet at home and Mike Smith made a great save early on to keep Clarkson scoreless."

Both Smith and Roeloffs finished with four saves in goal, while the Saints held a 6-4 shots on goal advantage.

With the win, the Saints improved to 5-1-1 on the season and remain undefeated in league play at 2-0-0, while the Golden Knights fell to 6-2-1 and 0-1-1.

St. Lawrence will continue league play and host Ithaca College on Saturday, September 29 at 3 p.m.
