Katie Clemmer scored in the 26
th minute to help the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the opening game of the North Country Classic on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Friday afternoon.
The win is the first for first-year head coach
Sinead McSharry in her first game at the helm of the program.
"Super proud of the efforts put in today by every one of our players," McSharry said. "The support on and off the field was tremendous and our team showed well in the attack. Stellar performance by our back lin and goalkeepers who maintained their composure under pressure. Katie [Clemmer] scored a well-deserved goal."
It was a dominant offensive effort for St. Lawrence, as they finished with an overwhelming 29-3 margin in total shots, including a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Clemmer's goal in the first half came off a Wentworth throw in from deep in the Leopards' own defensive third that was headed forward by St. Lawrence sophomore
Tori Daley for the Saints' goal scorer. Clemmer dribbled into the box before drilling a hard shot into the upper left 90 just past the outstretched hand of Wentworth goalkeeper Christie Fleming to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
Prior to the goal and throughout the second half, the Saints had a number of quality scoring chances with shots just wide. In the 20
th minute,
Madelyn Sumple rang the crossbar with a shot from distance.
Fleming had a career day for the Leopards, stopping 11 of 13 shots faced with the team also recording a defensive save on the line.
Samantha Allen started the game in goal for the Saints and was not tasked to make a save.
Cynnie White, who played the second half for St. Lawrence, recorded the lone stop of the game in the win.
The Saints will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field for a 2:30 p.m. match against Mount Saint Vincent in their second game of the North Country Classic on Saturday, September 1.
