It was all St. Lawrence from start to finish on Saturday afternoon as the Saints women's soccer team posted its second clean sheet of the weekend with an 8-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent in the North Country Classic on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Saturday marked the first time the Saints scored eight goals in a single game since the 2015 season when they beat Marywood 9-0 in the second game of the North Country Classic as well.
St. Lawrence outshot Mount Saint Vincent 38-1 on the day, with 18 shots on goal. The Dolphins lone shot of the game came with four minutes to play in the second half and was just wide of the right post. Though the offense shows on the score sheet, the Saints defensive corps stifled any offensive possession for the visitors before they were able to reach the box consistently throughout the game.
"Today was a great ending to a successful weekend," head coach
Sinead McSharry said. "Our players voted
Lauren Arthaud and
Olivia Goodwine as the "Woman of the Match" for this weekend's games, respectively, and I think that is a testament to what we saw from all of our players. When your own teammates are recognizing you for your overall contribution to the game, there can't be a better feeling than that regardless of the score or win/loss bracket."
Olivia Goodwine led the Saints with two goals in two minutes late in the second half, including the first of her career, while
Sylvie Holding, Isabel Sylvia and
Abigail Von Recklinghausen each tallied their first collegiate goals in the win. Von Recklinghausen also added an assist, joining Goodwine,
Katie Clemmer (1G, 1A) and
Morgan Ryan (2A) with multi-point afternoons.
The Saints were up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes after Holding opened the scoring with a finish on the near post in the 7
th minute before Clemmer followed with her second of the weekend just over two minutes later.
Gannon and Silvia added goals midway through the first half to push the lead to 4-0 heading into the break.
Emily Wade jumpstarted the Saints' offense once again in the 72
nd minute with the first of four second-half goals that came within a 15-minute span.
Goodwine notched her first of back-to-back goals in the 82
nd minute with a shot from deep within the box that hit the inside of the far post and skipped in for a 6-0 St. Lawrence lead. She pushed the lead to 7-0 with a bouncing shot from the top of the box off a feed from
Tori Daley, who had dribbled through a number of defenders coming from the Saints' backfield to set up the play.
For the eighth goal in the 87
th minute, Von Recklinghausen finished a shot from
Morgan Ryan that bounced just shy of the far post after collecting the loose ball and finishing into the middle of the net. Â
In addition to the Arthaud and Goodwine, McSharry also noted the efforts from
Julia Hill and
Emily Wade in the midfield before saying: "We saw many players in different positions which excited us and Monday we start preparing for a huge game on the road at Nazareth."
The Saints will take on the Golden Flyers on Saturday, September 8 at 3 p.m. in Rochester, New York.
