Senior captain
Jordan Dow netted four goals and assisted on two others and the Saints knotted the game at halftime, but the No. 19 and fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 RIT, 13-11, in the Liberty League semifinals on Wednesday afternoon in Rochester, New York.
Dow led the Saints with six points, while seven other members of the Saints' squad, including
Nick Brindisi,
Jack Hennessey,
Harrison Koch,
Steven Peterson,
David Jennings,
Jack Suominen and
Brian Cunningham, netted one goal. Dow and
Mike Donnelly led the Scarlet and Brown with two assists each, while
Conor Caffrey,
Evan Doodian,
Zachary Prime and goalkeeper
Matty Corbelle all picked up three ground balls and
Zachary Ettinghausen caused a team-high four turnovers.
The Saints came out swinging, building a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Peterson recorded his 12th of the season off a quick pass from
Brett Williams. About two minutes and 15 seconds later, Koch also snagged his 12th of the year at the 10:12 mark.
Dow tallied his first of the game, 32nd of the season and 106th career goal to cap the beginning run for the Saints.
Kyle Killen kicked off a six goal run for the Tigers on a man-up advantage with 8:05 to play in the first frame.
Down by three, the Saints rallied and recorded the next four, with goals from Suominen, Dow, Jennings and Hennessey to hold a 7-6 lead with over six minutes remaining until the break. Brendan MacDonald tacked on one more for the Tigers to knot the game at seven by halftime.
After the break, RIT added three more to the scoresheet, taking a 10-7 lead.
Cunningham scored with the one-man advantage, closing the cap to two, while Dow fired his third of the game to bring the game within one with 13:17 to play in the final frame.
Shawn Nally, Ryan Tandy and Cam Isaac added one more multi-goal run to give RIT a 13-9 lead and ultimately secure a trip to the Liberty League Championship game on Saturday.
Brindisi and Dow tallied two more goals for St. Lawrence for one last push, but the clock wound down before the Saints could come any closer.
"Obviously it was a game of runs and we just weren't able to get all the way back to answer the last one," said head coach
Mike Mahoney '93. "The effort was great all day, which it has been throughout the year. Our senior class was instrumental in keeping us on a good trajectory all season and we can't thank them enough for all that they did for this program."
RIT was led by Killen, who scored three goals and added two assists for five points. Tandy and  Isaac recorded two goals, while six other Tigers scored one goal apiece. Nate Farrell grabbed five ground balls, while Eli Salama caused three turnovers.
Corbelle made 10 saves between the pipes for the Saints, while Walker Hare made six for the Tigers. The Tigers held a 37-26 shot advantage, including a 23-17 edge in shots on goal.
The Saints ended the 2018 season 12-5 overall, while RIT improved to 17-0 and remained undefeated heading into the championship game. Â
