Carson Gicewicz's four assists as well as multi-point nights for
Alex Gilmour,
Ryan Lough and
Mike Marnell helped the St. Lawrence men's hockey team to a 5-2 win over Colgate on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
Gicewicz is the first player to record four assists in a single game since
Drew Smolcynski on October 11, 2014 at Niagara. Gilmour scored two goals for the second consecutive game and now has six goals through the last five, while Lough and Marnell each finished with a goal and an assist for the Saints.
Arthur Brey made 33 saves in the win to help the Saints improve to 7-20-2 overall and 3-13-1 in ECAC Hockey games. Colgate falls to 12-13-4 overall and 8-8-1 in conference play with the loss.
Lough opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the first period on the Saints first shot of the game off a rush from and beat Colgate netminder Bruce Racine high on the glove side for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead. Gicewicz earned the primary assist with a drop pass to Lough in the neutral zone.
After having the better of the play for much of the period after Lough's goal, Colgate evened the score at 1-1 at the 16:58 mark of the first with a tally from Paul McAvoy with assists going to Trevor Cosgrove and Mike Panowyk.
Late in the middle frame, Gilmour notched his first of the game with a one-timer from the near post just two seconds after Colgate killed off a penalty to Evan Tschumi to put the Saints back in front 2-1.
The play started with a rush from first-year defenseman
Bo Hanson, who chipped it into the corner before giving chase alongside Gicewicz. Gicewicz came away with it on the end boards and fed Gilmour at the side of the net for his second of four helpers.
Colgate once again came back to tie it with a power play goal at 5:50 of the third period from Nick Austin, but the Saints went on to score three straight to seal the win.
Nolan Gluchowski netted the eventual game-winning goal at the 9:03 mark of the third off a two-on-two break into the Colgate zone with Marnell.
Gicewicz sprung the Saints with a nifty backhand to Marnell in the neutral zone as he was coming off the ice for the change before Marnell fed Gluchowski in the slot. The Wixom, Michigan native got Racine to bite coming across the crease before putting a backhand into the open net to make it a 3-2 game.
At 13:31 with the Saints on the power play, Gilmour banged home a rebound off a shot by Gicewicz for his second of the game to increase the lead to two goals at 4-2.
Then, with 8.9 seconds remaining and Racine on the bench for the Raiders,
Matt Purmal chipped the puck off the half wall to Marnell who beat two Colgate defenders before firing the puck into the empty net for the fifth and final Saints' goal.
Despite being outshout 17-5 in the first period, the Saints came back to finish with a 39-35 edge in shots on goal on Friday night. Racine finished with 33 saves for the Raiders, while both teams finished 1-3 with the man advantage.
The Saints will return to Appleton Arena to face No. 3/4 Cornell on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
