Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall to UMass Dartmouth on the Road

Katie Frederick recorded her sixth double-double of the season and first-year Dylan Watkiss netted 12 points, but the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs, who received 14 votes in the latest D3hoops.com poll, 71-50 on Sunday afternoon at the Judy Pearson Memorial Tournament hosted by Babson College in Boston, Massachusetts.

Frederick, shot 4-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-8 from the line, leading the Saints with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Watkiss shot 2-for-3 from the arc and finished as St. Lawrence's only other double-digit scorer. Erin Kumler added six points and six rebounds, while Marlee Gunn added five points.

The Saints opened the game with a quick 11-4 lead over UMass Dartmouth after Kumler completed the 3-point play just over three minutes into the first quarter. Gunn extended the Saints' lead to 16-12 with a shot from the arc with 3:54 remaining. Danyel Gonzalez tied the game at 16 with a 3-pointer and Jess Korzec made a layup for the Corsairs first lead of the game with 1:11 remaining in the first frame.

The Corsairs scored first in the second and worked to extend their advantage over the Saints. Nakira Examond netted the layup giving UMass Dartmouth a 12-point lead halfway through the second quarter.

St. Lawrence pushed back bringing the score within single digits, but the Corsairs outscored the Saints 22-10 in the second quarter and claimed a 40-26 advantage at halftime.

The Corsairs continued to dominate in the third quarter, taking a 26-point lead off the layup from Jordan Moretti with 2:23 remaining, and improved their lead to 62-39 after the 30 minutes of play.

The Saints attempted to rally in the fourth, holding the Corsairs to only nine points in the final ten minutes, but the Scarlet and Brown couldn't overcome the deficit from the first three quarters.

"We met our match today against a really good team that has good, experienced players," said head coach Dan Roiger. "I thought we could stay closer to them, but we had a number of breakdowns and when we did, they took advantage of them.  When we didn't, we matched with them well."

"UMass Dartmouth is an NCAA team and we saw what we want to become," Roiger added. "Learning and developing consistency will allow us to get there."

UMass Dartmouth was led by Examond with 18 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the floor, and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Korzec also added 18 points, grabbed three rebounds and added five assists. Ashley Brown rounded out the top-three scorers with nine points.

The Corsairs combined to shoot 46 percent from the floor to the Saints 25 percent.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 5-4 on the season, while UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-1 overall.

St. Lawrence will face Salve Regina in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon. Tip off is set for 12 p.m. UMass Dartmouth will face Babson College in the championship game at 2 p.m.
