Three members of the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team scored as the Saints defeated Ithaca 3-1 in a Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, New York. With the win, the Saints record their second victory in a row and have yet to be beaten in conference play.
Stephen Dorney kicked off scoring for the Saints with his second goal of the season. Dorney headed the ball straight to the back of the net off a corner kick from
Miguel Ridruejo during the 34th minute of play.
St. Lawrence held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime and led the Bombers in shots (9-7) and posted a 7-2 shots on goal advantage.
Just after the break, Ithaca's Eric Hepler tied the game 1-1 off a pass from Zack Lichtman. The Saints responded accordingly and scored two goals just over ten minutes apart.
Taylor Williams added an unassisted goal for the game winner and
Tapshak Augustine fed
Charlton Kelly a pass for his third goal of the season.
"It was a good win on the road today," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "The players had to really grind out to get the result against a tough opponent. They continue to be very resilient and put in the work that's necessary to get wins in this difficult league. There were some big moments from big people today, obviously the goals, but also
Mike Smith, who made two very big saves in each of the last two games at important moments of the match. It was a complete team effort today."
Smith finished the day with two saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Max Lichtenstein made six saves for Ithaca.
St. Lawrence improved to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in Liberty League play. Ithaca dropped to 4-4-1 and 0-2.
Up next, the Saints will host RPI in a mid-week game Wednesday, Oct. 4th before hosting RIT on Saturday, Oct. 7th for Family Weekend.
