Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Edge RPI, 1-0; Move to 1st in League Standings

Jethro Dede's second goal of the season helped propel the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Rensselaer on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. With the win, the Saints improved to 5-4-2 and 3-0-1 in Liberty League play, while RPI fell to 6-3-1 and 1-1-1.

Right out of the gate, Brendan McNamee pressured RPI goalkeeper Matt LaBranche with a shot just 26 seconds into play. Dede recorded three shots on goal for the Saints, while McNamee and Charlton Kelly added the remaining two.

Tapshak Augustine tipped Dede a pass from about 18 yards out. Dede beat LaBranche on the left side to give the Saints a 1-0 with 3:31 to play before halftime.

St. Lawrence outshot the Engineers 16-6 and held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage. Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith made two incredible saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season. LaBranche finished with four saves for the Engineers.

"Again the team displayed resiliency and character to grind out another win," said head coach Mike Toshack. "Our defense, along with Mike Smith, played at a very good level in order to get another shutout."

"RPI is a good team and well coached," Toshack continued. "It was a win we had to work extremely hard to get and we look forward to RIT this weekend."

St. Lawrence moved to first place in the league standings after today's win.

Up next, the Saints host RIT on Saturday, Oct. 7th at 3 p.m. for Family Weekend. The match against the Tigers will also be recognized as a part of St. Lawrence's Power of Pink weekend and all proceeds raised will be donated to the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund.
